Last Hours in Nicaragua

Hola..

I'm currently sitting in the lobby of the Camino Real Hotel & Casino in Managua. This hotel is so much nicer than where I have stayed previously. I usually stay at the Las Mercedes Best Western, because it is directly across the street from the airport. This place is night and day from there, and there is a free shuttle to the airport. It's like comparing a Marriott, to a Motel 6. It has a really nice bar, pool, outside living space, and the rooms are nicer too. The crazy thing is that it's a few dollars cheaper.

I only have a few more hours here in Nicaragua before I head back to the states, and I'm sitting here with a cup of joe...reflecting on this trip. It's been pretty incredible, and I can't believe that it's coming to an end.

When I booked this trip, I was planning on staying in SJDS until this morning, but had to come to Managua a day early so Will & I could do some house shopping.

We only had a few hours yesterday morning to get things done, because most of the businesses close at noon. The first place that we went was the tile store. When we pulled up to the front door we immediately noticed that the place was empty....no bueno. It wasn't a big deal though, they had just moved locations and opened a new store a few miles away. The only problem was that Will wasn't exactly sure where it was. The roads in this town can be a maze, so we drove in circles for a little bit before we found it.

It was actually really cool because I got to see a part of Managua that I never have before...the nice part of town. There are a couple of neighborhoods here that look a lot like America. Nice looking coffee shops, restaurants and bars. Most of what I have seen here is the amazing poverty, and unsettling living conditions. It was kind of wierd to see the Park City of Nicaragua.

Anyway...once we found the tile store we spent some time looking at the tile and fixtures for our bathrooms and kitchen. Most of this was already picked out by Tyler & Justin when they were here in January, so we were basically just making the order.

After the tile store we went to the "Nicaragua Home Depot" which is called "Sinsa." This place is really amazing. They sell everything here. We got our kitchen sink, toilets, fans, door handles, and a couple other things. Just in case you didn't know this already...we are going to have a really nice fixtures in the house. Everything that I saw yesterday, and everything we purchased, is top notch for Nicaragua. Another thing that is really nice, is having Will's experience in building. He has completed 25+ houses down here, and he knows some of the challenges that there are in building, and keeping up a house in the tropics. He is always looking for things that won't break after a year of use, or making sure that things can be cleaned easily. It was a definite leaning experience for me.

We also purchased a 5000 liter water tank for our house. This will be used during the rest of our construction to store water on-site. After we are done, it will be our main water holding tank. It's very large, but it will be nice to have such a large amount of water supply at the house.

After the morning of shopping we stopped by Will's business partner, Maria's house. She wasn't there, but we had to stop by there to drop something off for her. Maria grew up in Managua, and seems to split here time between SJDS and here. I have spent a good amount of time with her and she is really a fantastic lady. She's only in her mid 20's, but is years above that in maturity and experience. She will also be a great person to know over the years as she knows Nicaragua so well.

We stopped by her house for a second, but before we could even say "hi" her sister invited us to stay for lunch. So Will and I sat down and had some bean soup and lemonade with the family. Most of the conversation revolved around the Tsunami that had happened hours earlier. Will's wife Vanessa was in SJDS and she said that they were going around town on a loud speaker telling everyone to go to high ground. A Tsunami Warning in SJDS. It was another good reason that we are building our house so far above sea level. Our house would be totally safe if Nicaraguan coast was hit by a Tsunami.

After visiting, and Will interpreting, we headed out here to Camino Real. Will and I discussed a few last things...like more pictures, more regularly...and we said our good bye's. He said that the house should probably be completed in 3 months.

I had the afternoon here to relax, and that's exactly what I did. I went swimming, sat by the pool, and finished off my day by watching the American's win the 4 man bobsled at the hotel bar, while drinking my last Tona of the trip. It was the first event that I have seen since the Olympics started. First & Last, since I managed to book my flight during the Gold Medal Hockey Game.
...I almost changed my flight to a 7am departure this morning, but the idea of spending 12 hours in the Houston airport (and the $150 fee) made me realize it probably wasn't worth it. I'm hoping that I can at least catch the last minute. It's going to be close.

So here I sit on my last morning typing away...

After I post this I'm going to get some breakfast, enjoy the last of the warmth, and I'm off. I will be sure to spend some time early this week going threw all my photos and videos, and will post them all as soon as I can.

I hope you have all enjoyed the progress reports, and I'm sorry that I didn't update is more regularly.

Adios from Nicaragua...

Desayuno

I’m sorry that I haven’t updated this blog for a little bit. It seems like I just updated it, and was surprised to see that it’s been almost a week. It’s actually a lot harder than I thought to take the time to sit down and write. It’s weird...time goes so fast here, yet I can honestly say that I feel like I’ve been here for months. The hostel that I’m staying at is such a social place, and everyone is so fun and interesting. The conversations that go on here are so good...I feel like I’m missing something if I’m not in them. Once the house is built, it will be nice to be able to come down here for dinner...have a great meal...and meet cool people. I love this place.

But at the same time I feel really bad that I haven’t been better at updating the blog as often as I thought I would.

I’m going to walk to the house this afternoon, take some more pictures, and post them as soon as I can. The progress seems to be more noticeable on a weekly basis, than it is on a daily basis, but it will probably be some of the last pictures I take before come home. I will take a ton of the the house though, and when I get back to the states I will post larger files. I will also go to town and take a bunch of pictures too.

I’m also going to start working on our house website when I get home, and would like to put a history of our building process on it.

I’m currently sitting in the lounge at Parque Maderas, where I have been staying for the last 2 weeks. I just got back from the morning surf session, and am waiting for desayuno (breakfast). The generator is on this morning, and we actually have internet right now, which is awesome.

Right now there are few things that are going on at once. They are still working on the garage, and have cut out all the windows and finished all of the walls. I really think that the living quarters for are cuitador are going to be nice size. I could even see myself living in something like that.

Will and I have also been meeting with Jason...the pool guy...and we are getting ready to start construction on that. The nica workers are currently filling in the retaining wall with dirt to prepare it for the pool. They are doing it all by hand which is really amazing.

The roof is still going on, and should be done within a couple of weeks.

Everything else is good down here...although it is really humid with these on shore winds. I love this place, but I am ready for some face shots at Solitude. Better post this before we lost the internet.....cheers

Hello from the Mango Rosa

Hello from Nicaragua...Day 10. I’m currently sitting at the Mango Rosa resort, which is a 20 minute walk from our house. Or a two minute ride when you get picked up by our neighbor Chuck...which is what happened today.

I apologize that I haven’t updated this blog for a few days. I would say that I’ve been to busy to write...and that’s part of it... but I’ve also been really busy surfing, reading, sitting in a hammock, drinking Tona’s, and visiting with friends that I’ve made while down here. The only time I have internet access at my hostel is after 6pm, and I’ve been too busy visiting with others to write. So today I came down here to get some lunch, and spend some time on my computer.

For the last week I have been staying at the Parque Maderas Hostel, which is very close to our house, and Maderas beach. It has been a fantastic stay. My routine has been pretty consistent everyday. I wake up and go surfing early...before the sun hits the waves. We call it “Dawn Patrol”. There is usually no one there besides the kids at the hostel. After surfing I go back to the hostel, and eat some breakfast. After breakfast is where I get creative. I either do some reading, go to town, check out the house, or take a siesta. It’s a really hot sun in the middle of the day, so the beach is it a bit much for my Irish heritage.

I’ve been to town twice...only to go to the ATM, and get a bottle of rum. Those were my 2 separate trips.

Two or three hours before sunset.. I head back to the beach. . While there...I spend my time either in the water surfing, or on the beach watching surfers, and drinking Tona’s. After the sunset, I cruise back up the the hostel and hang out with the other traveler’s. It’s a fantastic group of people. Two kids from France, a couple from Santa Rosa, and five girls from Boston...yea...five girls from Boston...cool girls too. Life down here is truly epic.

We all sit around and drink cocktails till dinner, which is at 7:30 every night. Then for the rest of the night, we continue to socialize, play card games (I taught everyone 31), play some music, and just relax. It’s been amazing.

Today I knew it’s been a while since I’ve updated this blog, so I came down here to the Mango Rosa (they have internet) to get some lunch, and update everyone.

As far as the house is going....it’s going really well. I went there again this morning and they just stared on the PEX. PEX is the system we are going to use to plumb the house. They are also finishing up the garage, and the roof. Hopefully that will be done by the time I leave. There are probably 10-12 workers that are working on the house at any given time. It’s fun to go there everyday and see the progress that happens.

I am trying to upload some pics and videos, but please be patient. The internet is either slow, or really slow, and today it’s really slow.

ALL PICTURES AND VIDEOS THAT I TAKE WILL BE HERE:

http://picasaweb.google.com/keeley.daniel

I also measured the size of our captain’s perch....22 ft by 16 ft....huge!! It’s going to be awesome.

Last week, Will & I went to visit the pool guy, and hopefully that will be getting started in the next couple of weeks. Will is pretty confident that the house will be done by the end of June, hopefully sooner.

As far as the area that we are building our house is concerned...it’s all good news. I have spent a good amount of time talking to land owners that our in our neighborhood, and I have gotten the same impression from all of them...things are moving faster than they ever have.

The city of San Juan del Sur is currently building a water pipeline that will bring water from Lake Nicaragua...which is about 20 miles away. This will provide the area with water, and our neighbors seem to think that someday it will make it out to our house. This would be awesome because we are currently getting our water from a well, which is not as reliable as piped-in water.

They are also building a new bridge on the road that leads to our house. This bridge is going over a river that is only there in the rainy season. But in the rainy season there are days where the river is impassible, which would mean that we would be stuck out at our property, and unable to get to town. That will no longer be a concern in 3 months.

There is also a lot of talk that the road that goes to Maderas Beach is going to be paved as well. Both our neighbor Chuck, and Tyler (owner of Parque Maderas) feel pretty confident that it is going to happen sooner than later. In fact, Tyler said that he has never seen things move as fast as they are right now.

Nicaragua is changing fast, and I honestly feel like we are getting in on the ground level. I have a few conversations with people...and they all said....where we are building our house is the best place to build in the area. Walking distance to the beach, walking distance to Parque Maderas and Mango Rosa. It's just a great area to be in.

I wish I could think of more to would write...but I can't. I will continue to post every few days if possible, and if anyone has any questions please write me at: keeley365@yahoo.com, and I will respond.

...looks like the internet just went down here, so even though I wrote this..this afternoon, it probably won’t post until tonight. Oh well....

Adios !!

Great article about San Juan Del Sur

This article highlights all of the infrastructure improvements that have been completed in the San Juan Del Sur Area in the past few years. It is exciting to see how things are progressing in this amazing area. This article validates our investment in this . Keep your fingers crossed for a regional airport in SJDS.

http://www.bignews.biz/?id=841783&pg=1&keys=nicaragua-real-estate-property

Other news: The new female president of Costa Rica has made it public that her administration wants to improve relations with Nicaragua and streamline immigration. If successful, this will bode well for San Juan Del Sur. It would be great to be able to fly into Liberia , CR, grab a cab that can cross the border to SJDS. it replaces the 2 hour drive from Managua to a 45 minutes.

Sunset from the Captain Perch

My first time watching the sun drop into the pacific ocean from the captain's perch.

Below is a pic I took of 7 hawks that were hovering above me during this sunset.

7 is my lucky number, and in my mind, it was a sign of really good things to come.

The hawks...their hard to see, but there

Must Watch.... New Progress Images

The House progression is moving at a rapid pace. Keeley is in San Juan and taking some great step by step pictures and video's. Love it!

Hello all..

Quick update.

Everything is going really good down here. I spent an hour or so with Will this morning, going over a bunch of stuff. We are going to use PEX for the plumbing in the house, and we watched a video that Jared made on how to do it. Will translated it to the plumber while I was there.

This house is going to be awesome. Tomorrow we are meeting again, and going over the electric and some other stuff. I honestly think we have the best contractor in the valley. This is a quality built house.

I don't have time to post any more pics tonight, but I will try to tomorrow.

On a separate note, I spent the afternoon surfing at Maderas. Great Day. The waves aren't huge, but perfect for learning. I got up and rode a wave for the first time...AWESOME!!

Hope all is well in states. I will have a few Tona's for everyone.

Cheers

The house looks great

Today I made my way to San Juan del Sur, and then to Parque Maderas Hostel. The hostel...where I am writing this right now...is a short five minute walk from our house. After I got dropped off here, I immediately headed up the hill to check out our casa.

There were probably 8-10 nicas working on it, and they are in the process of putting on the roof. I walked in through the front door, and was immediately shocked by how big the kitchen was. It's perfect. The window that will be above our kitchen sink is awesome. Looking right out into the Pacific Blue. Tyler was right when he said that the pictures don't do the place justice...they don't. The deck is also enormous, and since the roof is done on that side of the house...it's easy to tell that we are going to have a perfect amount of shade under the deck.

I then went up to the captains perch...wow! A 180 degree view. It's as good as I imagined.

I took a few pictures, and was able to download them to a picassa page.

I also took a video, but the internet is just to slow here to upload it. I will try to find a faster internet connection when I get into town sometime this week.

I'm going to meet with Will tomorrow, and talk a little about the plumbing. I should have more to share after the meeting.

All I can say is that house is beautiful...I'll write more later. Hope all is well in the states.

Made it to Managua

Hello all...

I made it safe to Managua, and am headed to San Juan del Sur right now. I don't have much to type. It was a fairly uneventful trip.

This blog is dedicated to the house, but I am also going to keep a personal blog..

http://keeleynicaraguafeb2010.blogspot.com/

I plan on writing in this one a little more.

I will also be keeping up on this one as it relates to the house.

Hope all is well in the states, it's a balmy 88 degrees in Managua today.

Cheers
